We obtained our data from the FBI Crime Data Explorer. Our website visualizes important trends in this data. For instance, in every year from 2015 to 2020, there were far more anti-Black hate crimes reported than other categories of racial hate crimes. For several categories, the total number of hate crimes nationwide increased during these years. Across all categories, the number of hate crimes each year is typically higher on the west coast, east coast, Texas, and certain states in the upper Midwest such as Ohio and Michigan. However, the scenario changes drastically when looking at the rate of half a million. For example, the states like Washington, Vermont, Oregon have higher anti-Black hate crime rate per half a million population.
