Zoom in to see information about visible restaurants.
New York City is known as the city that never sleeps, and its vast restaurant offerings support this. A clean restaurant and kitchen is important both for public health, but also for building customer trust. Using health inspection reports published by New York City's Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), this application provides a way to more easily examine these reports as well as a method to explore data for restaurants you are familiar with.
Restaurants in New York are graded on a scale of A, B, and C. A is the highest score, or least number of violations, and C is the lowest, or the most number of violations. You can read more about how these scores are calculated here.
Hover over a zone to see more information about it, and click the zone to zoom in.
Starting at the initial zoom, each zip code is filled corresponding to the average health score of restaurants in that area. Zip code scores are calculated by taking a weighted average of all restaurant grades in the area. A is weighted as 1, B as 2, and C as 3. Zones with more grade A restaurants (scores closer to 1) are colored yellow, while zones with more grades of B and C (scores greater than 1) are more orange.
Zoom in or click on a zip code, and restaurants will appear on the map as colored circles. These colors represent the grades, where A is green, B is yellow, and C is red. Restaurants with critical violations are outlined in black, whereas those without them are outlined in gray. Click on a restaurant, and more information about the restaurant and inspections will appear in the bottom right corner. (You may need to scroll to see all of them.)
Hover over a violation to see more information about it.
Starting at the "All of NYC" level, the bar chart shows the frequency of the top 20 different violation codes in a given area. Clicking the borough buttons change the chart. Additionally, once you're in the "Zoomed In Map View", the chart will show violation frequencies of zipcodes in that given area.
You can click on one of the violations in the bottom right corner of the screen (after selecting a restaurant) to see a pop-up with more information about it.
You can compare the violation the restaurant has with other restaurants of the same cuisine type, across the same zipcode, and across the city at large. The pie chart responds as you select these different options. Hovering on the piechart will give you the sliver's percentage, but the exact fraction can be seen in the text to the right of the chart.
