Artist Hometowns
Visipedia is an interactive tool for exploring visual art. The map shows the distribution of art galleries and artist hometowns. Clicking entries on the map will populate the sidebar with information about your selection.
Select a starting filter, or close this panel to begin.
You can scale, refine, and adjust your filter mode at any time using the control bar above the map.
Our data set contains almost 500 works of Baroque and Renaissance art from around 90 different artists.
Images, geographic locations, and artisti information was compiled manually. Art integrity was fact-checked using
the public-use provenance index published by the Getty Research Institute.
Read more about how we prepared and ensured the integrity of our data in our process book.
Interested in using Visipedia with a different data set? Though currently running off a dataset primarily composed of
Baroque and Renaissance work, our visualization supports any piece, regardless of medium or movement. Data must be
supplied in a well-formatted .CSV style. Visipedia takes care of the rest.
Following turn-in, we publish Visipedia as open-source academic tool for research, pedagogy, and communication. For more
information, contact the creators.
