Course Description.
Transforming complex information into clear, actionable insights is crucial, especially when addressing pressing societal problems. This course offers a rigorous introduction to the principles and techniques of data visualization. Topics include design, data mapping, visual perception, and interaction. We cover best practices for designing and building interactive web visualization tools and gain hands-on experience developing visualizations. We also learn to critique visual designs and evaluate the systems we build.
The course empowers students to create interactive data visualizations that drive social change and help solve real-world issues. Throughout the course, we will focus on how visualizations apply in social contexts. We will learn to analyze and interpret data on social issues such as public health, climate change, inequality, and education. By developing interactive visualizations, students will be equipped to present data in ways that engage diverse audiences, inform policy decisions, and foster community action.
